Remote video production is a great tool in the always-evolving tool kit of video production. See how it can change video production for marketing purposes.
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, video production abruptly halted like everything else worldwide. We were all working out of basements or kitchen tables with no chance to travel or meet people in person. However, we still needed to connect with people and capture video content, so we leaned on conference platforms like Teams and Zoom. These platforms allowed us to capture the content we needed, but the production quality was questionable.
I mean, lousy audio was common and don't forget the constant image freezing and the delayed and out of sync image and audio. But it was the COVID-19 pandemic; it was okay, and we learned to accept it.
As time passed, we, Gut & Grit Media, saw the need to build on that, to offer the ability to do remote video production that worked and offered great quality. Thus, we decided to start working on a way to develop a unique approach to remote video production.
First, we looked for a platform that offered us 1080p quality remote video recording. The platform also needed to give us control to provide feedback, direction, and recommendations live.
Once we found the platform, we developed a proprietary best practice manifest to improve the aesthetic of the video we were capturing, things like room lighting, acoustics, computer placements and more.
Then, we figured out a way to provide low-cost equipment recommendations to pair up with the recording platform and best practice manifest. We sourced equipment that could be shipped quickly via Amazon worldwide or other methods depending on where we needed to capture content. Some equipment included options like blogging cameras to high-end 1080p webcams, a user-friendly interview lighting package, USB microphones, etc.
Leveraging these elements, we were able to direct remote video productions across the world. We have directed remote video productions in India, United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden, United States and Spain. Not only did we have the control to direct a production just like a live production, but we were able to create high-quality video content just like live video productions.
Although we're out of that COVID-19 pandemic, Remote Video Production is still a great way to create video content. It's cost-effective, time efficient and flexible to reach people without travel logistics, managing local crews and providing briefs that can be misinterpreted.
The great thing about Gut & Grit Media's approach is that we can blend the remotely produced content with locally captured content, and it works. Secondly, if it needs to be done reasonably quickly, setting the production is just a matter of a few days versus planning and flying to a location. And thirdly, it helps people feel included. Sometimes, when we create content, it is easier to capture the people in local areas VS team members from other offices. With remote video production, we can showcase diverse people within organizations - ensuring they are heard and included.
Benefits of remote video production:
Cost-effective - no need to fly to the location or hire a local crew. We can interview people or get testimonials at a fraction of the cost.
Speed - We can set this up quickly. Source equipment, share best practices manifest, share the link to the recording platform and off you go.
Representation - anyone, anywhere, can be captured. Whether it's a team member, client or SME, they can be filmed.
Control - be able to direct the filming, provide feedback and ensure you're capturing precisely what you need.
Integration - remotely produced video can easily be mixed with other media, and post-production can start instantly after capturing the content.

The must-dos for remote video production:

Equipment - a small lighting, camera and audio equipment that is cost-effective can go a long way to ensure content is the best quality possible.
Best practices - lastly, the support material to ensure all equipment is maximized is key. Do remote location scouts, provide direction for equipment setup and tips for sound, wardrobe and more.
