How much should video production cost?

Updated: Feb 4, 2024

Cheap video production doesn't cut it. Do it right the first time. Choose wisely, don't be tempted by low cost, and get the results your business deserves.

Cost is subjective. It comes down to the kind of video we're creating, when and where we're making the video and how many videos we can create out of one production.

Sometimes you think you want quick and cheap, but the reality is sometimes that doesn't work at all.

Additionally, the cost of video production is not exact. It means cost varies with expertise, level of experience, capabilities and quality.

There are a lot of companies that charge little for video production and others that are higher-tiered. You might say what's the difference. Here are a few things to consider:

  • What's the process they follow? Are they asking you things like, tell me where to go, and I'll shoot it? That's it.

  • Or, are people spending time to understand the request and considering and proposing the best approach?

  • Can they actually direct a video shoot rather than capture stuff?

  • Can they actually edit, or are they just putting the video together?

  • Are you being taken care of, and is the process straightforward and on point or messy and last minute.

Fundamentally, many reasons affect video production costs, but ultimately, if you want a good product, cheap doesn't deliver it.

Additionally, the cost is tied to specific items like:

  • Do we need to hire talent?

  • Do we need a sound person to get the best audio possible?

  • Do we need to spend budget on specialized equipment to get the results you need?

  • Do we need to rent locations, or will you provide them?

  • Do we need to develop eye-catching graphics to help get people's attention on social media content or not?

  • Do we need to travel for filming, or is remote production sufficient?

The list goes on and on. But, ultimately, the only way to know the actual cost of video production is by doing a proper scoping process where ideas, business needs and outcomes are considered.

Another way to look at cost is not just the price. But what's the value you can get from it? And can you amortize it over time? Can you use the video(s) in more than one way, and will it actually help you stand out other than look and feel vanilla, like something anyone can do?

Clients had shared with us that they had produced videos before and went the "cheap" route and didn't get the results they wanted, didn't like the process, or simply missed the mark altogether, and the project quietly got shelved.

This is true in all aspects of life, do it right the first time. Choose wisely, don't be tempted by low cost.

Talk to people, ask questions to help you decide what price you should pay for video production to get the results you need, the services you deserve and the peace of mind of knowing you are in good hands.
